Protests in Transitional Government- held areas in Aleppo

Residents of the Sayf al-Dawla neighborhood in Aleppo, under the control of the Transitional Government, staged a protest in response to deteriorating economic conditions and tightening restrictions imposed by the city municipality.

This evening, dozens of residents of Sayf al-Dawla took to the streets in a demonstration denouncing the declining standard of living and economic hardships, and to protest decisions made by Aleppo’s city municipality under the Transitional Government in Syria.

The protest marched along one of the main streets of the neighborhood, with participants chanting slogans such as, “We want to live… we want to live… we want to live with dignity… Aleppo Municipality, leave us alone.”

According to one protester, the Aleppo municipality had seized their “livelihoods” and issued orders to remove their street stalls, amid currency collapse and difficulty finding employment opportunities.

The demonstration coincided with a heavy deployment of Transitional Government forces in public squares and around government offices, a move described by observers as precautionary, anticipating possible protests similar to those recently seen in Syria’s coastal region, Homs, and Sweida.
