Portuguese Parliament to discuss Kurdish situation in Syria

The text of the proposal stated that the Free Syrian Government forces, along with "extremist factions" indirectly supported by Turkey, launched attacks on the Syrian Democratic Forces, resulting in civilian casualties, the displacement of tens of thousands, and cases of arbitrary detention.

Freedom and Independence Party MPs stressed that any potential normalization of relations with Damascus must be conditional on a clear commitment to protect the Kurds, respect minority rights, and ensure forms of self-administration within the framework of the Syrian state.

The proposal also called on the Portuguese government, as a member of the European Union and the United Nations, to take practical steps, including monitoring the humanitarian situation in northern Syria in coordination with the EU and UN, implementing suitable mechanisms to protect the Kurds, and supporting efforts aimed at achieving an effective ceasefire.

The proposal further included a call to "establish an international monitoring mission under the auspices of the United Nations or the European Union" to document human rights violations in northern and eastern Syria, with Portugal participating in this mission.
