Politician: Kurdish Movement enters new phase, calls for unified leadership

Saleh Mohammad Abdo, a member of the Political Bureau of the Kurdish Left Party in Syria, spoke about the importance and necessity of Kurdish unity in light of the attacks faced by Kurds in the countries occupying Kurdistan, as well as the rapid changes taking place in Syria, the region, and the world.

The Political Bureau member pointed to the importance of unity in both ranks and political stance amid the rapid transformations occurring in Syria, the region, and the world, stressing that Kurdish unity has become an urgent necessity and one of the most prominent demands they have struggled for since the party’s founding.

He explained that the strength of the Kurds lies in their unity, calling on political parties and forces, along with intellectuals and various segments of society, to play their role in achieving a more cohesive and effective unity.

He also noted that the enemies of the Kurds have historically exploited internal divisions and loopholes to achieve their goals of weakening and dividing them, stressing the need to overcome these divisions and strengthen joint action.

The Political Bureau member addressed the importance of the Kurdish Unity and Common Stance Conference held on April 26 in the city of Qamishlo, considering that the political document issued from it represents a first step toward achieving unity, despite remarks regarding the mechanism of its convening.

Mohammad Saleh Abdo considered that establishing a Kurdish reference authority has become an urgent necessity to more strongly enhance unity, especially in light of the changes taking place in the region and the world, particularly after the recent events in Rojava.

He explained that the Left Party has been working since the beginning of this year to push toward forming this reference authority through holding a series of seminars and meetings with figures, intellectuals, and a number of political parties, noting that these efforts have been welcomed and accepted among the Kurdish public.

Abdo did not rule out that Rojava may witness, in the coming period, expanded meetings aimed at establishing a comprehensive Kurdish reference authority in the region.

The Political Bureau member pointed to a number of challenges hindering Kurdish unity, foremost among them external interventions, particularly from countries interfering in Kurdish affairs. He referred to the role of Turkey and the interim government in exploiting certain issues, including the issue of detainees, to fuel divisions within Kurdish society, expressing his confidence in Kurdish awareness and their ability to thwart these plans.

He also pointed to the existence of internal differences among political parties and components of society as a result of these interventions, stressing the need to expand the scope of meetings and dialogue following the recent Kurdish conference to enhance rapprochement and unify positions.

He considered that the changes taking place in the Middle East and the world represent a historic opportunity for the Kurds in the four parts of Kurdistan to achieve real rapprochement and resolve the Kurdish issue, affirming that they will be part of the ongoing transformations.

He pointed out that the recent attacks on Kurdish areas in several parts of Kurdistan have contributed to strengthening feelings of solidarity and unity of stance through protests and joint positions, describing this as an important indicator that reinforces hope for unity.

The Political Bureau member affirmed that these developments constitute a motivation to strengthen joint action and unify the Kurdish stance, stressing the importance of self-reliance in the struggle, alongside expanding relations with democratic and leftist forces and peoples who believe in the right to self-determination.

He noted that resolving the Kurdish issue in Syria does not concern the Kurds alone, but is linked to the future of all Syrians, and that the country’s recovery remains dependent on finding a just solution to this issue.

Mohammad Saleh Abdo expressed his respect for the call of leader Abdullah Ocalan for Kurdish unity, expressing hope that this call will develop and enter a new phase, despite the presence of parties seeking to undermine it.

He added that the Kurdish issue has today reached the stage of resolution, and that the Kurdish movement in Kurdistan is now closer to each other than ever before.
