Political Parties should fulfill their duty to achieve Kurdish unity

At a time when the Kurdish people face genocidal attacks targeting their existence in Syria, voices calling for Kurdish unity are growing louder. In this context, our agency met with several politicians and intellectuals in Qamishlo.

Ibrahim Mahmoud, the member of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), explained that the current phase in the region is extremely sensitive and aims at the extermination of the Kurdish people. He added: “Political parties have a duty to achieve Kurdish unity. This unity must become stronger so that Kurds can defend their land, rights, and achievements against attempts of genocide. Every nation can protect its land and accomplishments through unity.”

Mahmoud also pointed out that “the unity of the Kurdish people in the four parts of Kurdistan and abroad has grown through the spirit of resistance in Rojava. My call to all Kurds is to strengthen our unity and rally around our forces.”

For her part, Abir Hassaf, the  member of the Women’s Council in North and East Syria, stated that attacks on the Kurdish people aim to erase their identity. She added: “Despite this, there has been a strong national and liberation spirit across the four parts of Kurdistan, which carries great meaning for Rojava.”

Hassaf emphasized that “the recent changes and transformations are a historic step. Through the unity of the Kurdish people, current conspiracies have failed. At this stage, political parties also have responsibilities; they must review their positions and struggle for the Kurdish people. Today is a day of existence or annihilation; the time for unity has come. The Kurdish people must protect their national values, existing gains, and the steps already taken.”

Meanwhile, Mundhir Sheikho, the member of the Union of Intellectuals in the Jazira region, stated that the rapprochement of Kurds across the four parts of Kurdistan and abroad is a source of pride and respect. He added: “This is the first time such a position has been expressed regarding Rojava. The Kurdish hearts longed eagerly for unity, and now it is being realized. The hearts of all peoples beat for the Kurds. The meaning of unity is profound; it truly ensures our victory and freedom.”

Sheikho further explained that the Kurdish people no longer accept internal disputes, as they have already paid a heavy price. He concluded: “We are now more in need of unity than ever. Sedition and conspiracies must not be allowed, and those who try to sow discord among the Kurdish people must step aside, for the Kurds are capable of protecting the achievements of their revolution and governing themselves.”
