The PJAK issued a statement on the 43rd anniversary of the execution of 59 young men and women from the city of Mahabad by the Iranian authorities in 1983, describing the incident as one of the most painful chapters in the history of Kurdistan.

The party explained that most of those executed were secondary school students, many of them under the age of 18. It noted that 38 of the victims were students who had been arrested during March and April 1983 before being detained in the prisons of Urmia and Tabriz without fair trials or legal representation.

The statement added that the Iranian authorities declared a state of emergency following the executions to prevent protests, but the people of Mahabad still took to the streets in rejection of the crime, while the victims’ families traveled to Urmia to learn the fate of their children.

PJAK stated that the executions were part of a policy aimed at breaking the will of the Kurdish people and erasing their political and cultural identity, adding that “the blood of these young people planted the roots of awareness and resistance in Kurdistan.”

The PJAK emphasized the continuation of the Kurdish people’s struggle for freedom and affirmed that the memory of the victims of political executions will remain alive and that those responsible for these crimes will face justice.
