Peoples’ Council approves Hikmat Al-Habib’s resignation request

The Democratic Peoples’ Council in the Jazira Canton held a special session in the council hall in the city of Amuda to discuss the resignation request submitted by the co-chair of the Democratic Peoples’ Council, Hikmat Al-Habib.

The meeting was held In the presence of council members, along with representatives of the Executive Council of Jazira Canton and representatives of the Kurdish, Arab, Syriac, Armenian, Assyrian, and Yazidi communities.

After a moment of silence, the resignation request report was read during the session, then Hikmat Al-Habib, who served in his position for more than four years, was given the floor. He expressed pride in his work representing the Democratic Nation project and pledged: “I vow before you that, for the sake of building a democratic Syria, I will continue to perform my role better and persist in my struggle.”

Following the reading of the resignation report, attendees presented their comments on its content, affirming that submitting a resignation is his right, while simultaneously calling for him to nominate himself for new responsibilities.

The comments noted that Hikmat Al-Habib played a pivotal role in political work and that his presence was decisive during a transitional phase. He is considered a living witness to the establishment of the Democratic Nation system, and his personality is close to all the council’s community components.

At the conclusion of the session, Hikmat Al-Habib was asked to continue representing the communities of North and East Syria and to be their voice in upcoming tasks.

His resignation was officially accepted by the council members, and he was honored in recognition of his efforts over the past years.

It Is worth mentioning that Hikmat Al-Habib, representing the Arab component, played a fundamental role in founding the Autonomous Administration since 2012. He held various positions, including chairing Peoples’ Councils and Martyrs’ Families Councils until 2014, then participated in establishing the Social Contract in 2014.

He was a member of the preparatory committee for founding the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) in 2015, chaired its organizational office between 2016 and 2018, then served as co-vice president between 2018 and 2021, and finally as co-vice president of the Peoples’ Council in Jazira Canton from 2021 until now.

According to information from the Peoples’ Council in Jazira, a special session is expected to be held later to elect a new co-chair.
