Newroz 2026.. Masses flock to celebration squares in Girkê Legê,Derik and Kobani

With the arrival of Newroz, the festive atmosphere began to spread throughout the Jazera region, as people began to flock to the celebration squares in the cities of Girkê Legê, Derik and Kobani, to participate in the Newroz 2026 events, which are being held this year under the slogan “Let’s make Newroz a holiday for the freedom of Leader Apo and the democratic unity of the Kurds.”

On the occasion of Newroz, which falls on March 21st each year, residents of the Girkê Legê, Derik and Kobani regions in the Jazera area began gathering in the celebration squares amidst a festive atmosphere.

Girkê Legê

In the city of Girkê Legê, hundreds of residents from Girkê Legê, Çil Axa and their surrounding countryside, dressed in their traditional costumes, flocked to the Newroz Square in the village of Haliq, located in the Girkê Legê countryside.

The celebration square was decorated with pictures of leader Abdullah Ocalan, flags of the People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), as well as flags of the Martyrs' Families Council and banners bearing the words "Blessed Newroz" and the celebration's slogan.

The celebration program includes a speech by Hassan Kojer, advisor to the Autonomous Administration, along with artistic performances featuring artists Sumaya Mohammed, the Serhaldan Ensemble, the Alnya Ensemble, Hassan Derik, the Zalal Dance Troupe, a theater group, as well as artists Shadia, Bengin Adam, and Wael Hajo.

Derik

In the city of Derik, residents from the city and the villages of Koçerat and Berav, dressed in Kurdish dress, began arriving at Martyr çiçek Square to participate in the Newroz celebrations.

The celebration stage was decorated with Kurdish flags and symbols, along with the flags of the People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ).

The event is scheduled to include speeches by Fawza Yousef, a member of the Co-Presidency of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), and Mohammed Sharif, a member of the Martyrs' Families Council in Derik.

The celebration will also feature artistic performances by several groups, including the Judi Music Ensemble, the Avasheen Ensemble, the Feteria group, and the Koçerat Folk Dance and Music Ensemble, in addition to performances by artists Hassan Derik and Shivan Ciziri.

The influx of residents continues.

Kobani

In the Kobani region, residents headed to Mishtanur Hill, dressed in Kurdish attire, and decorated the celebration platform with Kurdish symbols and the Newroz torch.

The Internal Security Forces (Asayish) are providing the necessary protection for the residents.

The celebration is scheduled to include the lighting of the Newroz torch, artistic and musical performances, and a message from the people of Kobani for Newroz 2026.
