Newroz 2025: Freedom’s flame lights up NE Syria, Aleppo
The flames of Newroz 2025 were ignited in the celebration squares of NE Syria and Aleppo under the slogan: "The Physical Freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan is a Guarantee for a Democratic Syria." The festivities commenced in a spirited atmosphere filled with enthusiasm and broad public engagement.
Newroz celebrations kicked off across various locations in NE Syria and Aleppo, beginning with a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the Newroz fire—a symbol of light, freedom, and peace.
Under the central slogan of this year’s celebrations, thousands of people from across the region began arriving at 11 designated celebration sites, including Qamishlo, Dêrik, the village of Hêlîq in Girkê Legê, Tirbespî, Amûdê, Dirbêsiyê, Hasakah, Raqqa, Tabqa, Kobanê, and Aleppo.
In a powerful and emotional moment, families of the martyrs took center stage to ignite the Newroz flames, as the crowd chanted slogans calling for the freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan, officially marking the beginning of the celebrations.
The celebration squares were adorned with the Newroz 2025 emblem, banners featuring the images of leader Abdullah Ocalan and fallen fighters, as well as the flags of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Autonomous Administration, the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM), Kongra Star, the Zenobia Women’s Gathering, and the Council of Martyrs’ Families. Traditional Newroz colors—green, red, and yellow—added to the vibrant atmosphere.
The event saw massive participation from people of all ages and backgrounds, including Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs, and Armenians, many of whom wore their traditional attire, reflecting the cultural richness and historical depth of the region’s communities. This year’s Newroz celebrations also witnessed a notable presence from various parts of Syria, underscoring the spirit of solidarity and unity among the people of the region.
