Narges Mohammadi addresses a message to United Nations General Assembly

In conjunction with the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and the participation of the Iranian president, Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian political prisoner and winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, urged the Secretary-General and UN members to take immediate action to stop the brutal and mass executions of prisoners in Iran. 

Narges Mohammadi called in a message addressed to the United Nations General Assembly, calling for a precondition for any type of negotiations to achieve democracy and peace in the Middle East and Iran. 

It also called for urgent and decisive measures to halt the widespread brutal executions of prisoners, the release of all political and ideological prisoners, the systematic and targeted repression of Iranian women, the criminalization of gender-based apartheid, as well as the suppression of independent civil institutions. 

Narges Mohammadi pointed to the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî" uprising, which erupted following the murder of the young Kurdish woman Jina Amini by the so-called "morality police," describing it as a democratic movement calling for equality and freedom. She emphasized that this movement is facing brutal repression from the authorities, and that the killing and execution of activists, especially women, continues in Iran. 

About 47 political prisoners in Evin Prison announced a hunger strike, demanding an end to executions and the release of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience. 

The United Nations Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Iran warned in a report against issuing death sentences for activists, particularly women from ethnic and religious minorities. It noted that Iranian authorities have intensified their repression of women and young girls as the second anniversary of Jina Amini's death and the outbreak of the "Women, Life, Freedom" uprising approaches. 

The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly is being held in New York from September 24 to 30, under the theme "Promoting Peace and Sustainable Development."
