MJS: Building Syria’s future requires women's voices

 On the occasion of International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8, Suheil Al-Sanouh, the member of the Coordination Committee of the Syrian Women's Council, spoke to ANHA agency.

 At the beginning of her statement, al-Sanouh extended her congratulations to all women on this occasion, saying:

"We extend our appreciation to every woman striving for her rights and the rights of her community, particularly Syrian women, who have remained steadfast for achieving freedom and justice."

 She highlighted the rich history of Syrian women's struggle, citing historical figures such as Zenobia and the women of Mari. She pointed out that Syrian women were among the early pioneers in journalism and literature and have contributed significantly to various societal advancements.

 Despite the worsening hardships faced by Syrian women due to political, economic, and social conditions, Al-Sanouh noted that there has been a growing awareness of the essential role women play in peacebuilding and decision-making.

 She added: "Today, we witness a stronger determination among Syrian women to reclaim their rights, despite attempts to marginalize them from the political process and constitutional drafting. Women's representation in the transitional government does not exceed 10%."

 She stressed that establishing a fair and democratic Syria is unattainable without genuine female representation. She called for a legal framework that safeguards women's rights and an environment that ensures their active participation in political, economic, and social spheres.

 Ongoing Efforts to Strengthen Women's Role

 Al-Sanouh highlighted that the Syrian Women's Council holds biannual meetings to develop future strategies, including drafting a social contract and advocating for a women's constitution that guarantees their rights.

 "We are working to support women through training and empowerment initiatives, aiming to enhance their presence in decision-making positions," she said. "Our efforts are focused on ensuring that women's voices are an integral part of discussions on the constitution, national reconciliation, and reconstruction."

 Concluding her remarks, Al-Sanouh reaffirmed: "Syrian women have always been and will remain a symbol of resilience and hope. We will continue to support and empower them to be true partners in rebuilding Syria, as a democratic future can only be achieved through the participation of all components of society."
