The first sessions of the trial of Wassim al-Assad were launched at the Fourth Criminal Court in the Damascus Palace of Justice, according to what was reported by the Syrian Ministry of Justice website.

Despite not holding official positions in state institutions during the era of Baathist President Bashar al-Assad, Wassim al-Assad’s name has emerged in recent years in political and military circles, particularly in Syria’s coastal regions, where it has been associated with various economic and security activities.

During the years of the Syrian crisis, Wassim al-Assad appeared on several occasions alongside pro-government armed groups, and his name has been linked to local formations that participated in military operations across the country.

Media reports, human rights organizations, and international sources have also referred to allegations concerning his links to cross-border smuggling networks, including drug trafficking, accusations previously addressed in reports and international sanctions.

In this context, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Wassim al-Assad in 2023, accusing him of playing a key role in a regional drug trafficking network, and indicating his involvement in facilitating cross-border smuggling operations.
