MEP wearing Kurdish attire in European Parliament

European Parliament member Abir al-Sahlani, representing the Swedish Centre Party, appeared in traditional Kurdish attire during a session of the Parliament in tribute to Kurdish women and the Kurdish people, who, she said, “have paid a heavy price for their freedom.”

Abir Al-Sahlani stated that the Kurds are now asking for help, noting that Kurdish women are subjected to violations even after death, as terrorists cut off their braids. She added that when the Kurds responded to Europe’s call to confront ISIS mercenaries, “they were not only defending their homes, but our freedom as well. It is time to repay the debt to Kurdish women.”

She called for an immediate halt to the attacks on Kurdish areas, the imposition of a ceasefire, and the lifting of the siege on the city of Kobani, addressing the Kurdish people by saying: “We see you and we hear you. You have friends in the European Parliament more numerous than the mountains.”

Meanwhile, the heads of the political groups in the European Parliament discussed developments in Rojava and Syria today during a press conference in Strasbourg, but without taking practical steps to support the region.

The statements focused on human rights and the rule of law, with criticism of the weakness of positions toward the interim government in Syria backed by Turkey, which has been launching attacks on Rojava since 6 January.
