Member of KNN: Political will is foundation for achieving unity

Dr. Suleiman Elias, a member of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), mentioned that the first anniversary of the Kurdish Unity Conference in Rojava, which was held on April 26, 2025, represents a historical milestone in the Kurdish people's journey, as it was the first time various Kurdish forces and parties in Rojava gathered with the aim of unifying vision and stance.

Suleiman Elias explained that the conference represented a great hope for the Kurdish people, as it expressed their aspirations to reach a unified stance that protects Kurdish rights and establishes solutions to outstanding issues. He pointed out that this step received widespread welcome and was considered a historical achievement.

However, he pointed out that the conference faced a series of challenges, the most prominent being regional pressures and interventions, as well as party interests, which, according to him, contributed to the failure to translate the conference's outcomes into practical steps on the ground. He added that despite a year having passed since its convening, we have not seen tangible results.

 Elias held the political parties primarily responsible in this context, indicating that achieving Kurdish unity requires genuine will from the active forces, especially the two main currents capable of unifying the ranks and stance (referring to the National Unity Parties and the Kurdish National Council).

 In his discussion about the importance of unity, Elias emphasized that unifying the Kurdish front could strengthen the position of the Kurds in the political solution to the Syrian crisis and guaranty their constitutional rights, explaining that the absence of a unified stance weakens political influence, while unity grants greater representational power in international forums.

He pointed out that the widespread solidarity witnessed in the Kurdish street during the recent events in Rojava was evidence of the possibility of achieving unity. However, he expressed his concern that this state might diminish due to the disappointment among the people.

 He emphasized that achieving national unity requires political parties to set aside partisan interests and work on forming a joint Kurdish reference that expresses the will of the people and is capable of making unified decisions.

In conclusion, Suleiman Elias called for intensifying efforts and dialogs among the various Kurdish forces, as well as involving political and cultural figures to rebuild trust and achieve a genuine unity that meets the aspirations of the Kurdish people.
