Kurdish writer wins Best Mother-Tongue Work Award for “A Woman’s Tears”

Kurdish author Fawziya Bashara has received the Best Mother-Tongue Work Award at the Iranian Literary Festival for her short story collection “A Woman’s Tears”, which was praised by the jury for its expressive narrative style and its strong commitment to Kurdish cultural identity.

Fawziya Bashara, originally from Bijar and currently residing in Sanandaj in Eastern Kurdistan, won the award at the 24th Iranian Literary Festival held in the capital, Tehran.

The festival organizers announced that Bashara’s collection “A Woman’s Tears” earned the award in recognition of “its expressive narrative style and dedication to cultural identity.”

The collection is written in the Gorani dialect and was first published in 2022 before being translated into Persian by translator Mastura Derakhshi.

Fawziya Bashara is considered the first woman to write short stories and novels in the Gorani dialect, a distinction that has brought her wide recognition in Kurdish and Iranian literary circles alike.
