Kurdish Tribal Union: Only partnership, mutual respect can build Syria's future 

The General Council of the Kurdish Tribal Union in the Jazira Region issued a statement today, on the occasion of Newroz, calling for strengthening the role of tribal and community leaders in containing crises, restoring stability, and returning to the original values that have historically united Syrians, which they proudly consider a living part of their heritage.

The statement read: “Newroz comes every year carrying deep symbolism that goes beyond the limits of celebration to be an expression of freedom, renewal, and a collective memory that holds a long history of patience, suffering, and hope. For the Kurdish people, it is not merely an occasion but a cultural and national entitlement that affirms their presence as an essential partner in shaping the future of Syria.

Over the past years, the country has witnessed important transformations that produced a number of rights and achievements, in which the Kurds played an active role alongside their Arab and other fellow communities in defending the land and consolidating the principles of coexistence and partnership. From this standpoint, we affirm that the unity of Syria, land and people, remains a comprehensive framework that does not conflict with recognition of Kurdish specificity but complements it within a fair national vision.

In this context, we express our regret over some behaviors that accompanied the Newroz celebrations, describing them as behaviors that exceeded the civil nature of the occasion, including random vehicle convoys, excessive noise, and heavy gunfire in streets and public squares, which caused disorder and anxiety and diminished the noble meaning of the celebration.

We hold the responsible authorities, particularly the security apparatus in the governorate, responsible for weak organization and leaving wide spaces uncontrolled, which allowed some young people to express their joy in undisciplined ways.

The severity of the situation increased after the incident of lowering the Syrian flag, and the subsequent tense reactions seemed as if they were waiting for such a mistake to direct harm toward the Kurdish people in general through attacks on civilians, insulting Kurdish flags, burning them, targeting vehicles, and assaulting innocent people—actions that are rejected, condemned, and cannot be justified under any circumstances.

Generalizing a mistake and turning it into a pretext to attack the dignity of any Syrian component is a behavior that threatens civil peace, and falling into a cycle of mutual reactions places society on a dangerous path that serves no one.

From this, we affirm that Syria should not be governed by a logic of reaction but by wisdom, and that the word must belong to the wise and community leaders. We, in the Kurdish Tribal Union, with our deep heritage in customs and values, affirm our adherence to the original ethics that have always served as a safeguard for our society, and we reject any violation of these values, which we are the first to uphold and preserve.

Accordingly, we call for:

- Commitment to civilized conduct in celebrating national and cultural occasions

Rejecting sedition and any inciting speech - targeting any component of the Syrian people

- Holding security authorities responsible for protecting civilians and maintaining order

- Strengthening the role of tribal and community leaders in containing crises and restoring stability

- Returning to the original values that have historically united Syrians, which we proudly consider a living part of them

Finally, we reaffirm that the future of Syria can only be built on genuine partnership, mutual respect, and the preservation of the dignity of all its people.
