Kurdish Media between reporting truth and challenges of unifying ranks

On the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day, the Union of Intellectuals in Jazira organized a lecture titled "Kurdish Media: Its Position and Role in Unifying the Kurdish Ranks" at the Reading Garden in the Tel Hajar neighborhood of Hasakah city, attended by a number of intellectuals, those interested in media affairs, and members of the union.

The lecture was delivered by Union member Abdul Wahab Birani, who gave a broad presentation on the reality of Kurdish media, addressing its key role in reporting the truth and promoting public awareness, especially amid the complex political and security conditions facing the region.

He pointed out that Kurdish media, especially television channels, played a major role in recent years in delivering the voice of the Kurdish street to local and international audiences and in revealing developments directly, helping present a realistic picture of events on the ground, away from blackout and misinformation.

He explained that Kurdish satellite channels and media outlets were present in various fields, from battlefronts to civilian life, reporting people's suffering and resilience, documenting important stages of the region’s history, strengthening Kurdish cultural and linguistic identity, spreading awareness of the Kurdish cause more widely, and creating space for discussion and exchange of opinions among different groups in society.

At the same time, Birani addressed several negative aspects still affecting Kurdish media performance, foremost among them dependence on party agendas and regional divisions, which limit independence and weaken its ability to present a unified discourse representing all components of society.

He also referred to weak professional and technical capabilities in some media institutions and the lack of coordination among them, which sometimes leads to conflicting information or a lack of accuracy and objectivity.

Birani highlighted the challenges facing journalists, from restrictions and field difficulties to direct dangers during coverage, recalling the sacrifices made by many male and female journalists who were killed while carrying out their duty of reporting the truth from frontlines. He stressed that these sacrifices should motivate continued free and responsible journalism.

At the end of the lecture, Birani called for developing Kurdish media by strengthening professionalism and independence, avoiding narrow rhetoric, and building a national, inclusive media that helps unify Kurdish ranks and positions.

The lecture also included interventions and discussions from attendees, focusing on the importance of supporting free media and overcoming current challenges to strengthen its role in serving society and the Kurdish cause.
