Kongra Star in Zirghan calls for accountability in killing of Dilan Omar

Kongra Star in Zirghan issued a public statement regarding the killing of 18-year-old Dilan Omar by her father in the village of Swêdîk in Derik on Thursday (May 21).

The statement, read by Kongra Star member Ektimal Mohammed al-Abdullah, described Dilan’s killing by her father as a crime that shook the human conscience and a blatant violation of women’s right to life, safety, and dignity.

The statement condemned the killing of Dilan, emphasizing that it cannot be justified under any social or traditional pretext, adding: “True honor is not built on violence and bloodshed, but on respect for human beings, their rights, and their freedom.”

The statement stressed that the continued killing of women and young girls exposes the extent of the danger women still face in society and confirms the urgent need for a serious stance from legal, social, and human rights institutions to put an end to the culture of impunity and work to protect women from all forms of domestic and societal violence.

The statement also called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the crime, accountability for all those involved, zero tolerance for crimes against women under any justification, strengthening laws and mechanisms that protect women and young girls from domestic violence, and intensifying public awareness campaigns to confront patriarchal thinking and the culture of violence against women.
