Human rights reports indicate that the Revolutionary Court in Bandar Abbas, Iran, has sentenced Souda Ebrahimi Shamsabadi—a 23-year-old detainee suffering from multiple sclerosis—to death. The charges against her include "insulting the President," "propaganda against national security," "intelligence cooperation with hostile governments," and "photographing a military site."

This comes as Iranian authorities continue to hand down death sentences against political detainees—both men and women—in cases involving political and security-related charges, amidst growing criticism regarding the expanded use of this punishment; human rights organizations assert that these rulings reflect an escalation in repressive practices in recent years.

Born in Arak and raised in Tehran, Souda Ebrahimi currently resides in Bandar Abbas; she was arrested on charges of sending images of a missile attack to foreign media outlets. She faces a difficult health situation, having suffered from multiple sclerosis for six years, in addition to psoriasis and other health issues.
