KOBANI

Yesterday, Friday, the city of Kobani witnessed a massive demonstration condemning the abduction and subsequent death of Sami Hasso—known as "Sipan Hazni"—a fighter with the Syrian Ministry of Defense, in Hasaka Governorate. A large number of local residents participated in the protest.

Tensions flared during the demonstration when General Security forces attempted to disperse the crowd; the area saw stone-throwing and gunfire aimed at breaking up the protest, while forces arrested several young men and took them into custody.

Subsequently, tensions escalated inside Kobani Prison following reports circulating among inmates that they were to be transferred to prisons in Aleppo; this sparked unrest within the facility and led to fires breaking out in several dormitory wards.

According to available information, the fire and unrest resulted in the deaths of nine inmates and injuries to 17 others, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Kobani is currently experiencing a state of uneasy calm, pending official clarifications regarding the circumstances and consequences of the events that unfolded in both the city and the prison.
