Iran executes student in Eastern Kurdistan, continues arrest Campaign

Today, Iranian authorities executed a university student at Urmia Prison in Eastern Kurdistan, after he had been held in solitary confinement since December 17, on charges of cooperating with “enemies of Iran.”

The student, from the Theater Department at Shahroud University, was subjected to severe torture during interrogation before the death sentence was issued against him.

In a related development, Iranian security forces over the past days arrested at least 17 Kurdish citizens in the cities of Abdanan, Oshnavieh, Bokan, Piranshahr, and Miandoab, transferring them to unknown locations without judicial orders, according to the KURDPA Human Rights Organization.

These measures come as part of the Iranian regime’s continued crackdown on protesters and activists, which intensified notably after the “Women, Life, Freedom” protests in September 2022, in addition to a security campaign following the war with Israel.

The United Nations General Assembly recently voted on a resolution concerning human rights in Iran, marking the first time it addressed “cross-border repression,” while Secretary-General António Guterres warned of increasing death sentences, torture of detainees, repression of minorities, and restrictions on civil liberties.
