Iran closes Strait of Hormuz

Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation until further notice, in a move that could carry wide-ranging economic and security repercussions at the regional and international levels.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to international navigation until further notice, stating that the decision comes in response to what it described as “U.S. and Israeli attacks” targeting Iranian territory in recent hours.

Media outlets quoted a senior Revolutionary Guard official as saying that the decision to close the strait has already taken effect, in a step that could have broad economic and security implications regionally and globally.

In a related development, Reuters reported that vessels passing through the area are receiving repeated radio messages on high-frequency channels from the Iranian side, warning that no tanker will be allowed to transit the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important strategic maritime passages in the world, with around 20% of global oil supplies passing through it.
