International human rights organizations denounced the renewed detention of Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, while the Nobel Committee urged the Iranian authorities to immediately reveal her location.

Shirin Ardakani, the French lawyer representing Mohammadi, said on X that the rights activist was arrested on Friday after she spoke out about the death of lawyer Khosrow AliKordi during his memorial ceremony in the city of Mashhad, in northeastern Iran.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee called on the Iranian authorities “to clarify Narges Mohammadi’s whereabouts immediately, ensure her safety and security, and release her unconditionally.”

Ardakani said Mohammadi was beaten prior to her arrest, while reports circulating on social media indicate that her whereabouts remain unknown.

Reporters Without Borders said that four journalists and other participants were also arrested during the memorial ceremony for human rights lawyer AliKordi, who was found dead in his office on December 5.

Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has spent more than ten years of her life in prison, with her most recent detention beginning in November 2021.

She was granted temporary release in December last year for medical reasons.
