The framework law concerning the Peace and Democratic Society Process was published in the Turkish Official Gazette, marking the beginning of preparations for its implementation. Implementing the law requires the formation of monitoring bodies and committees, the preparation of a verification and confirmation report, and ultimately a decision by the National Security Council paving the way for the practical implementation phase. On August 20, 2026, the city of Qamishlo will mark the centenary of its founding, recalling the journey of a city that emerged on the banks of the Jaqjagh River and transformed within a century from an area covered with reeds and grass into a prominent population, commercial, and cultural center in the Jazira region. The city has carried several names associated with its history and communities, while its urban planning, population diversity, and economic and cultural importance have left a clear mark on its identity over the past century.

Residents of the Alyan villages called for greater attention to Zakhira Dam and the surrounding area, the planting of trees, and better use of its water resources to help revive the area and transform it into a natural recreational space and destination for families, while also benefiting from its agricultural potential. Amid media campaigns that have continued for decades and intensified in recent months, aimed at portraying the Kurdish struggle and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) negatively and framing this struggle as terrorism rather than acknowledging its roots in the denial of Kurdish existence and rights, the region has now reached a sensitive historical stage. Under the leadership of Abdullah Ocalan, the party’s movement has succeeded in transforming the course of the conflict after decades of armed struggle and bringing the Kurdish issue to the political negotiating table, while insisting on historic Turkish-Kurdish brotherhood within a democratic republic. This transformation should not be viewed as a surrender, but rather as a strategic achievement aimed at sparing Turkey and the region from war and destruction amid the conflicts and tensions affecting Syria, Iraq, Iran, and other parts of the region, as well as harsh international policies toward the existence and future of the Kurdish people.

The Relations Office of the Syrian Democratic Council is organizing a discussion seminar titled “Transitional Justice: Between Reality and Aspiration,” to be delivered by the former Minister of Human Rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the current Secretary-General of the Afro-Asian Solidarity Organization.
