On this day in 1989, the great Kurdish artist Mohammed Sheikho passed away, but his voice did not. He left behind a vast artistic legacy reflecting the struggle of his people across the four parts of Kurdistan, thus becoming part of the collective memory of the Kurdish people. With more than 120 songs, his work became a cultural record, and his songs calling for unity and freedom continue to be sung across generations.

Syrian media figure and activist Ensaf Slaytin affirmed that Syrian women today stand at the heart of the consequences of the ongoing war, as they are the most affected by violence, displacement, and economic collapse, amid the absence of a real protection system and the declining presence of women in political decision-making positions.

Kurdish intellectuals pointed out what distinguishes this year’s Newroz, highlighting its connection to Kurdish unity and the emphasis on resilience in the face of ongoing challenges and attacks. They called for strong participation in popular and cultural events to strengthen national symbols, defend political and cultural rights, and express the Kurdish people’s love for life and peace. A Kurdish political analyst stressed that the Kurds are facing a sensitive stage where opportunities and risks overlap, particularly with the escalation of war against Iran and the possibility of shifts in the balance of power in the Middle East. He said Kurds must act wisely, strengthen unity, and prepare politically without rushing into the conflict in order to protect their interests and avoid repeating past tragedies.

Whenever injustice, oppression, and tyranny appear somewhere, resistance becomes the most appropriate response. Since the first blows in history were directed at women—whose rights were taken away—resistance also began with women. The attackers targeted women’s existence, killed their brothers, kidnapped the mother goddess and her children, and looted their crops and fields. Yet women never bowed their heads and never accepted the injustice imposed upon them.

In the spirit of the martyrs Deniz and Ziyad, and in support of the resistance for existence and dignity, a group of artists from the Painting Commune in Jazira will organize an art exhibition at the Mohammed Sheikho Center for Culture and Art at 11:00. (Photos and video attached).

On the 37th anniversary of his passing, the Union of Intellectuals of Rojava Kurdistan (HRRK) and the joint body of Kurdish writers and intellectuals in Rojava Kurdistan will visit the grave of Mohammed Sheikho in Helaliyah shrine at 11:00.

In addition, the Jazira Artists Union and the Mohammed Sheikho Center for Culture and Art will commemorate the late artist at the center named after him in Qamishli at 14:00. (Photos and video attached).
