Guterres stresses cessation of violence and accountability for perpetrators of violations in Syria

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over the escalation of violence in the Syrian coast, which has seen widespread killings, including the killing of entire families and the killing of an UNRWA staff member.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at his daily press conference, "The Secretary-General expresses his sincere condolences to the Syrians who lost their loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured."

The UN chief called on "all parties to protect civilians and stop inflammatory rhetoric and acts, as Syria struggles with the legacy of 14 years of conflict and more than five decades of authoritarian rule."

He reiterated his concern over the escalating tensions between communities in Syria, saying that the bloodshed must stop immediately, the perpetrators of violations should be held accountable and the concerns of Syrian communities addressed in a meaningful manner.

"The Secretary-General has taken note of the announcement by the caretaker authorities of the formation of a commission of inquiry, as well as a commission for the maintenance of civil peace. Guterres stressed the importance and urgency of inclusive and transparent transitional justice and reconciliation processes for sustainable peace in Syria.
