The UN Secretary-General warned that escalating conflict in the region threatens peace prospects in Syria, and called for the Lebanese state to have a monopoly on the use of force and for ceasefire agreements to be implemented.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Wednesday that any escalation of the conflict in the region would have direct repercussions for Syria, stressing that Syrians, after more than 13 years of violence, are finally beginning to regain hope for a path toward peace and stability.

During his address to the Security Council, Guterres declared his full support for the Lebanese government's monopoly on the use of force, calling on all parties to abide by ceasefire agreements and work toward a settlement that guarantees Lebanon's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, in accordance with Resolution 1701.

The Secretary-General also welcomed the three-week extension of the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, noting that the move provides an opportunity to continue dialogue and reduce tensions, and commending the United States for its role in facilitating this escalation.
