From symbol of Ba’athist authority to peace square reflecting Hasakah’s residents aspirations

After the fall of the Ba’ath Party regime in Syria on December 8 of last year, and the assumption of responsibility for the security zones in neighborhoods formerly controlled by Ba’ath authority by the Autonomous Administration, efforts began to rename public facilities previously bearing the names of Ba’ath Party figures. Within this context, the square known as “President Square” was changed to “Peace Square.”

Over the past two months, the Hasakah City Council, in cooperation with the People’s Municipality, launched an online referendum to rename the square. The referendum presented a list of proposed names reflecting the cultural and political diversity, and the aspirations, of local residents. Thousands of the city’s inhabitants participated.

The new name, “Peace Square,” received the highest percentage of votes and was officially adopted.

This decision reflects the hopes of local residents for a new phase of stability and coexistence after years of turmoil in the region.

With this step, the square that once symbolized an authoritarian era is transformed into a landmark carrying a new message: peace and hope for the future of Hasakah and its people.
