Free Media Union congratulates journalists on World Press Freedom Day

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, the Free Media Union affirmed that independent journalism is the cornerstone of any democratic society, given its pivotal role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights.

The Union emphasized that this day comes amid a marked decline in global press freedom indicators, with escalating violations against journalists; arbitrary arrests, trials, and intimidation, direct targeting while covering crises and protests. The Union also warned against the exploitation by some governments of exceptional legislation to restrict journalistic work and criminalize the dissemination of information, particularly in conflict zones.

The Union highlighted the significant challenges faced by journalists, especially in Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Turkey, where violations such as detention, threats, and abduction persist within an atmosphere that hinders their ability to perform their professional duties freely and safely.

The Union made clear that these practices not only target journalists but also infringe upon the society's right to knowledge, weaken public discourse, and limit the capacity to address challenges, stressing that the free press is essential for achieving development and building peace.

The Free Media Union called for the protection of journalists, guaranteeing the independence of media outlets, safeguarding the right to access information, holding violators of these rights accountable, and revealing the fate of the forcibly disappeared.

The Union saluted journalists in Syria and around the world, emphasizing that silencing the voice of truth represents a loss for society, and that defending press freedom is defending truth and humanity.
