France calls for new international arrest warrant against al-Assad

The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office has submitted a new request for an international arrest warrant against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, accusing him of carrying out deadly chemical attacks in Syria in 2013.

According to the French newspaper Le Monde, the request comes after the Court of Cassation annulled the previous arrest warrant last Friday.

On Friday, France’s highest national court requested the issuance and international publication of an arrest warrant for Bashar al-Assad on charges of complicity in crimes against humanity and complicity in war crimes.

In November 2023, two investigative judges in Paris issued an arrest warrant against Bashar al-Assad on charges of complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes, in connection with the chemical attacks attributed to the Syrian government in 2013.

These attacks were carried out on August 4 and 5 in Adra and Douma, and on August 21 in Eastern Ghouta, where more than 1,400 people were killed by sarin gas, according to U.S. reports.
