Ezidi Civil Community urges PM to free 5 fighters

In an urgent appeal, the Ezidi Civil Community called on Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani to release five Ezidi fighters who were detained following a confrontation with the Iraqi army on March 18, 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the community emphasized the need to address the matter “in a spirit of justice and reconciliation,” urging the government to adopt a “balanced and flexible approach” when handling both humanitarian and security-related issues.

The statement clarified that the incident “does not reflect the brotherly ties between the Ezidi community and Iraqi security forces,” and highlighted the long-standing cooperation and shared sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.

Describing the detainees as “loyal soldiers of Iraq,” the Ezidi Civil Community called for their release ahead of the Ezidi New Year, a holiday symbolizing forgiveness and unity.

The statement also commended government efforts to reconstruct the Shingal region, calling for the acceleration of reconstruction projects and the provision of essential conditions for the safe return of displaced families. Thousands of Ezidis remain in difficult conditions years after their displacement.

The statement concluded with a renewed call for a pragmatic and inclusive policy approach that supports national stability and upholds the rights of all Iraqi communities.
