EU affirms continued support for Syrian people

The EU Delegation to Jordan confirmed its ongoing support for the Syrian people, with a particular focus on Jordan.

Mary Horvers, Head of Governance and Human Development at the Delegation, stated that assistance provided through the EU Regional Trust Fund “Madad” in response to the Syrian crisis has exceeded €2.38 billion since 2011.

She explained that this support came with contributions from 23 countries, aimed at helping Syrian refugees and host communities.

Horvers added that this funding is part of a broader aid package for the region, with a total value of €35 billion, to which the European Commission contributed around €15.61 billion. The assistance has been directed toward education, health, social services, and protection programs.

Meanwhile, UN Resident Coordinator Adam Abdelmoula stated earlier that 16.5 million Syrians remain in need of humanitarian assistance, noting that international funding for the response is extremely limited, with the 2025 plan receiving only 14% of the required $3.2 billion.

Abdelmoula explained that more than 6 million Syrians are internally displaced and another 6 million live as refugees abroad. He pointed out that 24% of housing has been destroyed or damaged. He also noted that the United Nations has begun early recovery programs and the rehabilitation of vital infrastructure, stressing that investment in development is the best way to ensure a more stable and dignified future for the Syrian people.
