Engineers’ Union of NE Syria condemns Turkish occupation’s attacks on Tishrin Dam

Today, the Engineers’ Union of the North and East Syria region issued a statement to the public from Tishrin Dam, condemning the Turkish occupation's attacks on the dam. The statement reads:

"We, the Engineers’ Union of the North and East Syria region, strongly condemn the attacks on Tishrin Dam, located on the Euphrates River in North and East Syria. The dam strengthens the region's infrastructure, energy, and water supply, as it houses a hydroelectric power station that generates approximately 630 megawatts of electricity. This contributes to providing the region with electricity and helps irrigate the surrounding agricultural lands, thereby enhancing agricultural production and regulating water flow to reduce the risk of flooding.

From our professional standpoint as the Engineers’ Union of North and East Syria, we affirm that the dam has faced numerous challenges over the past years, most notably the decline in water levels due to excessive withdrawals by the Turkish occupation state, which controls the sources of the Euphrates River.

Additionally, the dam is currently being subjected to continuous shelling by Turkey on its structure and surrounding areas, which affects its efficiency and worsens the situation, posing a significant threat to the dam’s condition and leading to potentially disastrous consequences.

We, the Engineers’ Union of the North and East Syria region, call on international organizations, UN bodies, and civil society to stop the ongoing Turkish attacks on the dam and its surroundings, considering them a crime against humanity."*
