Elderly Kurdish man shot dead in Afrin countryside

An elderly Kurdish man was found dead this afternoon among olive trees in the countryside of Afrin after being shot twice in the head, under circumstances that remain unclear.

According to local sources cited by the Human Rights Organization – Afrin/Syria, the victim was Mohammad Murad, known as Abu Tawfiq, 60, from the village of Khalnira in the Afrin countryside.

The sources said that Mohammad left his home this morning in his car to irrigate his olive grove. When he failed to return by the afternoon, his wife contacted their sons and informed them of his delay.

His sons went to the olive grove west of the village to search for him, where they found him dead among the olive trees with two gunshot wounds to the head. His car was still parked at the scene, after which they notified the relevant authorities.

The competent authorities launched the standard legal procedures before handing the body over to his family for burial. The identity of the perpetrators and the motive behind the killing remain unknown.

According to the Human Rights Organization – Afrin/Syria, the circumstances surrounding the crime are still under investigation.
