Der Spiegel: Germany to withdraw troops from Hewlêr by September

The magazine, citing a briefing presented to the German parliament's Defense Committee, reported that the withdrawal will be completed by the end of September. Around 30 German soldiers are currently stationed at the field camp located near Hewlêr Airport.

Germany has already significantly reduced its military presence in the Middle East due to security concerns stemming from the Iran conflict.

A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense confirmed that the ministry had already briefed lawmakers on the matter and stated that Germany intends to gradually reduce the number of its troops in the region. However, no details were provided regarding the timeline or the number of personnel involved.

The spokesperson stressed that Germany is only reducing its presence and that essential support services, including assistance provided to the Peshmerga forces, will continue. A team of military advisers will remain at the German embassy to carry out this mission.

German forces have been stationed in Hewlêr for years as part of Berlin's contribution to the international coalition against ISIS, providing training, advisory services, and support to the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

When asked whether the U.S. military's plans influenced Germany's decision, the Defense Ministry spokesperson said the move was made in coordination with coalition partners.

"There is no single decisive partner," the spokesperson said during a press conference. "This is a joint decision involving all partners."
