Amid ongoing attacks by the Free Syrian Government mercenaries supported by Turkey on Rojava, voices opposing these attacks are rising. In this context, Egyptian political parties and forces called for serious international action to protect Kurds in Syria, warning of the deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to the practices of the Free Syrian Government.

They emphasized that targeting the Kurdish people, a key partner in defeating ISIS, threatens not only their security and rights but also regional and international interests. This, they say, requires strict legal measures and punitive actions to stop violations and ensure protection.

Call to Protect Rojava Kurds

Over one hundred politicians, journalists, intellectuals, and artists from Egypt and the Arab world, alongside representatives of political parties and civil society, signed a joint statement condemning the attacks. The signatories demanded protection for the Kurdish people and recognition of their legal rights, noting that the current political project in Syria is exclusive and unilateral, led by political Islam, which aims to impose control by force.

Free Syrian Government Fully Responsible for Kurdish Safety

As fears grow over the deteriorating humanitarian situation for civilians in Rojava, Khaled Hafez, advisor and head of the Egyptian Democratic People’s Party, warned against the silence of influential forces and its impact on attempts to depopulate Rojava.

Hafez told ANHA agency that the Free Syrian Government, led by Ahmed Al-Shara, bears full responsibility for the safety of the Kurdish people and for guaranteeing their rights within Syria without discrimination among its communities. He stressed that making decisive decisions on behalf of the Syrian people is a grave mistake that could deepen crises. Regional stability, he added, cannot be achieved without internal stability based on justice.

He also urged the international community to take urgent steps to protect Kurds in Syria, especially under increasing pressures from the Free Syrian Government, warning that any political or security vacuum affecting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) or the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) would increase the vulnerability of the Kurdish population.

Need to Guarantee Kurdish Rights and Recognize Autonomous Administration

Political sociology expert Dr. Hosni Ahmed said that the Kurdish issue and the experience of self-administration are key elements for the stability of northern Syria. He emphasized that implementing the March 10 Agreement and ensuring the political and cultural rights of Kurds, alongside recognizing self-administration, would enhance security and strengthen the chances of building a just and united Syrian state.

Call for Immediate Action to Protect Kurds in Syria

Dr. Ahmed stressed that the Kurds’ cultural and historical environment qualifies them for an active role in the current stage. Protecting Kurds in Syria is no longer solely an internal matter; it reflects a sophisticated understanding of the seriousness of the current phase. Targeting Kurds poses a direct threat to regional stability and international counterterrorism efforts, as Kurds were a key partner in defeating ISIS.

He warned that any negligence in protecting Kurds would undermine the credibility of the international community, calling for urgent global action including deterrence mechanisms and clear sanctions against any party violating Kurdish rights or threatening their existence.

Declared Calm, Field Escalation

Observers agree that the Free Syrian Government continues to deepen division, despite the announced 15-day extension of the ceasefire agreement. Instead of consolidating calm and initiating reconstruction, its mercenaries, supported by Turkey, continue attacks, leading to field escalations and violations that could return the country to a cycle of violence. Meanwhile, the SDF continues to uphold the truce as a gateway to dialogue and finding solutions.
