Eastern Deir-ez-Zor residents face bread shortage as public bakeries close

All public bakeries in the villages and towns of the eastern countryside of Deir-ez-Zor have closed due to a lack of flour and the absence of government support, leading to a shortage of bread in most areas and doubling the prices of bread loaves sold by private bakeries.

ANHA correspondents from the eastern countryside of Deir-ez-Zor reported a severe shortage of bread due to the unavailability of flour, amid widespread public anger and frustration over successive livelihood crises following the entry of the Syrian Interim Government factions into these areas.

According to sources, all public bakeries have stopped operating in the eastern countryside of Deir-ez-Zor due to the lack of flour and the absence of support from the institutions of the Interim Government.

Sources indicated that only private bakeries continue producing bread, but this has caused the price of a loaf to rise by 100%, further increasing the economic burden on residents.

The same sources confirmed that the majority of residents in the towns and villages of eastern Deir-ez-Zor have been without bread for two days, amid widespread anger and frustration over the lack of intervention by the Interim Government’s institutions, leaving traders and hoarders to manipulate people’s food and livelihoods.
