Demonstration in Qamishlo demands official recognition of Kurdish language

Hundreds of residents of Girkê Legê city, along with students and teachers, took to the streets on Tuesday in a massive demonstration demanding official recognition of the Kurdish language and its inclusion in the Syrian constitution.

The march began at Martyr Khebat Square and proceeded through the city's main streets, drawing a large crowd, as the participants carried banners emphasizing the importance of the Kurdish language, including slogans such as "Our language is our strength, and we will not relinquish it," "Our mother tongue is our homeland," and "We want to study in our language."

The demonstrators shouted slogans stressing that the Kurdish language represents the identity and existence of the Kurdish people, demanding its recognition in the constitution of the new Syria, and chants of "No life without language."

Upon reaching the central market, the march transformed into a protest, beginning with holding a minute of silence. Then, teacher Avin Yousef spoke, stating, "The Kurdish language is our existence, and it must be enshrined in the constitution of the new Syria."

She added that the Kurdish people have made great sacrifices and will continue their struggle until their rights are achieved, especially the students' right to learn in their mother tongue.

Avin Yousef called for official recognition of the Kurdish language, stressing the importance of not wasting the students' efforts, and that Kurdish language represents the language of an indigenous people in the region.

The march concluded with chants demanding recognition of the Kurdish language and the slogan "No life without language."
