DEM calls for framework law to consolidate peace, secure resolution to Kurdish issue

The co-chairs of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM), Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, issued a written statement today following their meeting with Speaker of Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş.

According to the statement, the meeting focused on the Peace and Democratic Society process, a proposed framework law, and a series of recommendations put forward by the party.

The statement reads:

"During our meeting with Mr. Numan Kurtulmuş, we emphasized that a framework law must serve as a solid legal foundation for the democratic resolution of the Kurdish question and for Turkey's democratization. We reiterated that the legal framework should also address Mr. Abdullah Ocalan's status and that creating conditions under which he can work freely is of critical importance.

We explained that the framework law should encompass all citizens, transforming the Kurdish question into a matter addressed through legal and political mechanisms rather than conflict. We stressed that the mistakes of the past cannot produce a lasting solution and that peace and democracy constitute the only viable path forward.

During the meeting, we underlined that the proposed legislation must safeguard the interests of all 86 million people living in Turkey while protecting the dignity of every individual. We emphasized that the law should receive the support of all political actors and that the Kurdish question a century-old issue transcends partisan divisions.

We further stressed that the framework law must be inclusive of all people and that the mechanisms established under this process should strengthen social peace. Our fundamental demand is for the framework law to lay the foundations for democratic integration and to guarantee democracy, the rule of law, and freedom for everyone.

We reaffirm our determination to bring the Peace and Democratic Society process to a successful conclusion, and we once again express our appreciation for Mr. Kurtulmuş's efforts and his engagement with the public."
