Death toll from Syrian Coast massacres reaches 1,676

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented the names of another 17 civilians, including 4 women, who were executed in Banias earlier during the wave of executions in the Syrian coastal region.

This raises the total number of named, documented victims to 1,676 civilians who were killed as a result of executions that began early last month and continued through April 9.

In addition to the killings, thousands remain missing, and hundreds of bodies are being held in morgue refrigerators in Latakia Hospital and other coastal areas. These bodies have not been returned to the victims' families, and no documents have been signed confirming that they were killed by “terrorists.”

The Syrian Observatory noted that the killings have not stopped in the Syrian coast and its mountainous regions, which have witnessed bloody events. Violations have also included widespread looting of homes, shops, and even cars, amid a complete lack of legal accountability.

In a related context, Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the diaspora, stated that the ongoing acts of killing, abduction, and mutilation of bodies—while victims are still alive—in the Syrian coastal region necessitate urgent international intervention to protect civilians. He emphasized that this suffering also affects wide segments of Syrian society, including Kurds, Druze, and Christians.
