Damascus- Amman discuss strengthening cooperation, following up on Sweida file

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi met today with Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani in the capital, Damascus. The meeting focused on bilateral relations.

Safadi arrived in Damascus today, where Al-Shaibani received him at Damascus International Airport. The two ministers subsequently held a meeting at Tishreen Palace, during which they discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries across various fields, as well as preparations for the third session of the Jordanian-Syrian Higher Coordination Council, scheduled to be held in Damascus next October.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the talks also focused on developments in southern Syria and the implementation of the tripartite roadmap between Syria, Jordan, and the United States concerning Sweida Governorate.

The meeting comes as Damascus has reaffirmed its continued implementation of the roadmap. On September 7, Al-Shaibani said that Syria was moving steadily forward with its implementation, with the aim of establishing peace in Sweida and ensuring its stability, while emphasizing the governorate’s integration into the national fabric and guaranteeing the rights of its people.

From the Jordanian side, the meeting comes as a continuation of Amman’s declared position in support of Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and stability, as well as the implementation of the roadmap concerning Sweida.

Safadi and Al-Shaibani had previously emphasized, during earlier talks, the importance of fully implementing the roadmap.

The roadmap, which was adopted in September 2025, sets out a series of measures to address the crisis in Sweida, including consolidating stability, protecting civilians, releasing detainees, promoting social reconciliation, restoring services, and facilitating the return of displaced people. It also calls for the establishment of a Syrian-Jordanian-American mechanism to monitor and follow up on the implementation of its provisions.

Safadi’s visit to Damascus is viewed as a new step in the process of Jordanian-Syrian coordination, particularly with the third session of the Higher Coordination Council approaching. The council serves as the main framework for developing cooperation between the two countries in the political, economic, security, and public services sectors.
