The DAA of Deir ez-Zor announced the start of rehabilitation of the military pontoon bridge on 21 December 2024. This structure, situated between the town of Al-Husseiniyah and the city of Deir ez-Zor, represents one of only three bridges historically connecting the Euphrates’ eastern and western banks. Presently, it stands as the sole remaining vehicular crossing point in the region, following the destruction of other bridges by ISIS mercenaries and the Ba’athist regime.

The bridge’s strategic significance cannot be overstated, as it substantially enhances population mobility and facilitates the fluidity of commercial, economic, and agricultural activities between both banks. Its restoration is projected to alleviate immense logistical burdens on residents, eliminating reliance on costly alternative routes or rudimentary transport methods such as ferries.

Furthermore, this rehabilitation initiative marks a tangible, progressive stride toward improving public service infrastructure in Deir ez-Zor, underscoring the DAA’s commitment to addressing civilian needs and delivering essential services.

Maher Al-Amlah, the member of the Deir ez-Zor Executive Council, clarified in an interview with ANHA agency that the Military Pontoon Bridge had sustained severe damage in prior years, rendering it inoperable.

Al-Amlah emphasized that technical teams from the Deir ez-Zor Services Commission, in collaboration with the Northern Company and the Deir ez-Zor Municipal Services Directorate, are engaged in intensive efforts to restore the structure.

He affirmed that ongoing efforts are concentrated on removing compromised sections of the bridge and replacing them with new materials, alongside comprehensive maintenance of the supporting pillars. Al-Amlah noted that the project transcends mere emergency repairs, prioritizing structural rehabilitation to ensure the bridge’s long-term sustainability and capacity to withstand projected traffic volumes. The focus on replacing damaged components and reinforcing foundational elements reflects a holistic vision to restore the bridge to optimal functionality.

Al-Amlah disclosed that the total cost of the rehabilitation project amounts to $54,000 USD, utilizing machinery and resources from the Services Commission. He projected the bridge’s reopening within the coming days, signaling an imminent end to residents’ hardships.
