DAA calls for safe return of IDPs demands the departure of mercenaries

The head of the Office of Camps and Displaced Persons Affairs in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Sheikhmus Ahmed, confirmed that the Autonomous Administration issued a decision on January 23, 2025, aimed at facilitating and supporting the voluntary return of camp residents in North and East Syria.

Sheikhmous Ahmed explained in a statement to ANHA's agency that the Autonomous Administration subsequently appealed to all countries, particularly the United Nations, the UNHCR, and the Damascus government, to facilitate the return of displaced persons from Afrin, al-Shahba, Tal Abyad/Gire Spi, and Serekaniye. He emphasized the need for this return to be free of any presence of the Turkish occupation army and its mercenaries, and for all those who settled in these areas after the displacement of their residents to leave.

Ahmed indicated ongoing coordination with the UNHCR, where a proposal was made to form a tripartite committee comprising the Autonomous Administration, the UNHCR, and a committee representing the Damascus government to monitor the conditions of the displaced and discuss mechanisms for their safe return.

Ahmed noted that the UNHCR conducted surveys of displaced persons from Afrin, al-Shahba, Tabqa, and Raqqa to assess their willingness to return. He emphasized that the administration is setting the condition for a safe return without the presence of mercenaries who commit crimes and violations against the indigenous population.

Ahmed also expressed the office's hope for continued meetings between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Damascus authorities, calling on international human rights organizations to pressure the parties responsible for the displacement of residents. Ahmed stated that the number of people displaced from Afrin and Shahba to the areas of Tabqa, Raqqa, and Jazira has reached approximately 20,000.

Concluding his remarks, Ahmed expressed his hope that the issues of the displaced and refugees will be resolved, marking the beginning of a new phase toward building a future Syria. He emphasized the need for genuine international support to ensure their safe and dignified return.
