Continuous efforts to rehabilitate electricity stations, networks in Qamishlo

The Qamishli Electricity Authority has been conducting a wide-ranging campaign for about two months to rehabilitate substations, networks, and power lines in the city and its countryside, as part of a plan aimed at improving the electricity situation and restoring stability to the electrical grid.

The institution explained to ANHA's agency that the electrical infrastructure in the city has not seen comprehensive maintenance for more than 15 years, which has led to a decline in the efficiency of many stations and lines, and increased the challenges faced by maintenance teams.

The institution indicated that the targeting of electricity stations by the Turkish army during 2023 led to the northern station in Qamishlo city going out of service, causing prolonged power outages in the city.

It added that the current rehabilitation works include the maintenance and reactivation of about 280 electrical transformers, more than 50 of which have sustained varying degrees of damage due to vandalism and theft, requiring significant technical and financial efforts given the available resources.

Regarding the electricity supply to the region, the institution clarified that the amount coming from the Euphrates Dam to al-Jazira regions is currently about 50 megawatts, while the actual needs of the region exceed 200 megawatts.

It also highlighted the importance of rehabilitating the high-voltage line (230 kV) extending from the Tishrin Dam, passing thru Mabrouka and al-Hasakah, and reaching Qamishlo, which suffered significant damage following the occupation of the city of Sere Kaniye/ Ras al-Ain in 2019.

The institution confirmed the completion of maintenance work on the northern main station and its reoperation, while work continues on the southern station, where part of its lines had been activated. Two electrical lines have been put into service so far out of the 15 lines being rehabilitated.

According to the institution, maintenance workshops work daily from morning until evening to complete the rehabilitation work as quickly as possible, ensuring the improvement of the electricity situation in the city of Qamishlo and its villages.

It also indicated that maintenance work has so far included around 200 electrical transformers, while efforts continue to complete the maintenance of the remaining transformers and networks, in addition to monitoring and directly repairing technical malfunctions as they occur.

The institution indicated that most villages in the countryside of Qamishlo are currently receiving electrical supply for no less than two hours daily, with ongoing efforts to increase supply hours in the upcoming period.

At the end of its speech, the Qamishlo Electricity Authority called on the residents to cooperate in protecting the electrical infrastructure and to report any cases of theft or vandalism targeting transformers and electrical lines, emphasizing that maintaining these facilities is a collective responsibility that contributes to improving and sustaining the service.
