Clerics: Brotherhood, tolerance key to Syria’s national unity

This comes at a time when Syria has witnessed a marked escalation in hate speech, with rhetoric of incitement and sectarian division increasingly used as a tool to fuel conflict and deepen rifts, particularly by pro-transitional government media outlets and online platforms.

In this context, Ahmad al-Jassem, head of the Committee on Mosque Affairs within the Democratic Islam Conference in Hasakah and its countryside, stated:

"In the Democratic Islam Conference, we regard ourselves as a forum of love and fraternity for all religions and sects. This is the democracy we aspire to see among all peoples and communities living on our land. Just as Caliph Omar (may God be pleased with him) ensured safety for churches when he opened Al-Aqsa Mosque, he laid the foundation for coexistence."

Al-Jassem further underlined that the Conference of Democratic Islam is founded on principles of justice and equality, stressing the importance of restoring women’s rights in spheres from which they were excluded due to outdated customs and traditions. He said: "Islam grants women full and comprehensive freedom, and we strive to translate this into practice within our institutions and communities."

For his part, Muhammad Amin Qasim, Director of Mosque Affairs in Hasakah and its countryside, affirmed that Islam came to strengthen the values of brotherhood among peoples, noting that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided through his actions an enduring model of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Qasim added:"Islam is a platform for forgiveness, tolerance, and coexistence. It is not a ground for racism or division among peoples, but rather a solid foundation to reinforce fraternity and compassion across all communities."

He concluded by emphasizing that drawing upon these values in the current stage represents a crucial step toward consolidating genuine democracy and achieving shared living, thereby ensuring Syrian unity across its diverse components.
