On October 5, the Syrian Transitional Government conducted parliamentary elections amid the exclusion of key components from North and East Syria and the Druze community. This move does not reflect the will of the Syrian people nor their aspirations, particularly given the continued marginalization of other groups’ demands and rights, the appointment of one-third of the parliament members, and the restriction of membership to a single faction without fair representation of other communities.

A Critical Phase for Syrian Society

In this context, Jaafar Ali Ali stated: “The Syrian society is undergoing massive erosion, and overcoming this phase can only be achieved through a national dialogue conference that brings together the diverse segments of Syrian society.”

Elections Following the Footsteps of the Former Regime

Ali explained that the election mechanisms employed by the “de facto authority” closely mirror those of the previous regime, where all elections served the interests of the centralized state without regard for pluralism or genuine representation.

He added: “Today’s so-called ‘People’s Council elections’ resemble the old regime’s approach, lacking transparency and true representation of Syria’s diverse components, effectively reproducing the old system in a new guise.”

Importance of National Dialogue and the Autonomous Administration Model

Concluding his remarks, Jaafar Ali Ali emphasized that comprehensive national dialogue is a fundamental step toward resolving the crisis, while calling for the meaningful incorporation of the democratic Autonomous Administration experience in North and East Syria should there be genuine intentions to build a nation that guarantees the rights of all its citizens.
