Calls for accountability, national unity as Syria’s security remains fragile

Rochdi welcomed the de-escalation efforts in northern Syria, noting a meeting between Interim Prime Minister Ahmad al-Sharaa and several senior ministers with the leadership of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Damascus.

The meeting resulted in an agreement on a comprehensive ceasefire, followed by technical talks between the Ministries of Interior and Defense and SDF representatives regarding the implementation of the March 10 agreement on military integration.

She also addressed the situation in As-Suwayda Governorate, pointing to the persistent fragility of security despite efforts to contain tensions. She called for the activation of the roadmap issued on September 16, and for confidence-building measures, affirming that any solution must respect Syria’s sovereignty and unity while guaranteeing the rights of the Druze and Bedouin communities.

Rochdi stressed that foreign interference in Syria is unacceptable, urging all regional and international parties to avoid any actions that could be perceived as a threat to Syria’s sovereignty.

She further noted that the transitional process has yet to meet the aspirations of Syrian women, stating that the electoral process was not fair to them from the start, and that they are calling for future elections that ensure their legitimate rights and active participation.

The UN official affirmed that Syrian women are engaged in the transition process and seek a greater role in the coming phase, urging concrete steps to prevent their exclusion from leadership positions, while commending the peaceful environment in which the recent elections were held.

During the session, the U.S. representative called on the interim government to promote national unity and integrate all components of society, urging Damascus to seize the opportunity of sanctions relief granted under President Trump’s decision.

The Russian envoy stressed that Syria needs international support and multi-faceted assistance, asserting that domestic issues must be resolved by Syrians themselves without external interference.

The British delegate underlined that political pluralism is key to building a more stable Syria, while the French representative described Syria’s diversity as its greatest asset.

The French envoy also emphasized the need for unhindered humanitarian aid access across Syria and urged the international community to support the country’s early recovery process.
