Baghdad denies granting temporary residency to Assad regime officers

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior denied today that it granted "temporary residency for humanitarian reasons" to dozens of officers and commanders of the former Syrian regime army.

The ministry's spokesman, Brigadier General Muqdad Miri, said in a statement published by Iraqi media outlets that "some social media sites circulated news about the Iraqi government authorities granting "temporary residency for humanitarian reasons" to dozens of officers and commanders of the former Syrian regime army who sought refuge in Iraq on December 7 and 8, with the entry of opposition forces into Damascus."

"The websites added that Baghdad agreed to their entry through the Albukamal border crossing after disarming them. While we deny this news in its entirety, we stress the importance of knowing information from its official sources exclusively and staying away from malicious rumors," Miri added. He stressed that "the Iraqi Ministry of Interior did not take any action regarding granting residency for any reason to the officers and leaders of the former Syrian army, as some are trying to promote."
