Australian delegation visits NE Syria, praises counterterrorism efforts

The delegation met with Fanar Al-Kait, Co-Chair of the Department of Foreign Relations, along with deputies Rubel Bahou and Kulistan Ali, in Qamishlo, Jazira Canton.

The Department’s leadership welcomed the visit, describing it as a positive step, and emphasized the need for broader international engagement with North and East Syria and for advancing serious political dialogue to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Discussions addressed the overall situation in Syria, particularly in North and East Syria , highlighting the Democratic Autonomous Administration model as a replicable example, and underlining the pioneering role of women across both civil and military institutions.

Both sides reaffirmed that a comprehensive political solution remains the only path to ending Syria’s decade-long crisis, stressing the importance of implementing the March 10 agreement and guaranteeing the rights of all Syrian components, especially women’s rights.

Senator Shoebridge expressed his appreciation for the experience of the AANES, particularly regarding women’s participation in decision-making, stating that this model “deserves support and recognition as a unique democratic experiment in the region.”

He further praised the Autonomous Administration’s efforts to maintain stability and combat terrorism, commending the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for their role in countering ISIS mercenaries.
