In August, French courts issued seven arrest warrants against high-ranking former Syrian regime officials, including the ousted President Bashar al-Assad. They are accused of orchestrating the bombing of the press center in Homs in 2012, which led to the killing of two journalists, according to lawyers representing the civil parties.

On February 22, 2012, the building housing several journalists came under gunfire, prompting them to evacuate. Shortly after exiting, the first two journalists were killed by a mortar shell: American journalist Marie Colvin (56) of The Sunday Times and independent French photographer Rémi Ochlik (28). Inside the building, French correspondent Edith Bouvier, British photographer Paul Conroy, and their Syrian translator Wael al-Omar were injured.
