Algeria investigates Syrians over forged documents

Algeria is investigating the forged passports and identity cards of Syrians residing in Djelfa. Twenty suspects, including 12 civil servants, are involved. The documents were forged for 13 individuals, including 12 children.

The Algiers Judicial Council announced its intention to open an investigation into the forgery of passports and biometric identification cards issued to Syrians residing in the country next Tuesday.

Algerian sources stated that 20 suspects, including 12 detainees, most of whom are employees of the municipality of the northern city of Djelfa, will appear before the court for investigation into the case.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the forged documents were issued to 13 individuals, including 12 children.

The opening of the case follows a complaint filed by the head of the biometric documentation department at the Djelfa municipality in February 2024, following the discovery of forged passports and identification cards issued to individuals who did not hold Algerian citizenship. This raised concerns about the extent of forgery and its practices within local institutions.
